Do Electric Cars Rust?

7 min read · Updated September 2026

Yes — EVs rust just like any other steel-bodied vehicle

If you assumed your electric car was immune to rust, you're not alone — but you're wrong. Electric vehicles use the same steel body panels, subframes, and structural components as conventional vehicles. Steel plus water plus salt equals rust, regardless of what powers the drivetrain.

In fact, some early EV owners have been surprised by how quickly rust appears on their vehicles in Ontario. The fundamental chemistry hasn't changed: road salt dissolves in moisture, contacts bare metal through stone chips and coating gaps, and oxidation begins. Your EV's battery doesn't change that equation.

What's different about EV rust

EVs are heavier than equivalent gas vehicles due to battery packs, which means more road spray from tires and more stone chip damage on wheel wells and rockers. The extra weight also puts more stress on suspension mounting points, which can crack protective coatings faster.

Battery enclosures and their mounting hardware are a new corrosion concern unique to EVs. These components are directly exposed to road spray and salt. While manufacturers protect them, any damage to the enclosure coating — from road debris, speed bumps, or winter ice chunks — creates a rust entry point on a component that's critical to the vehicle's safety and value.

On the positive side, EVs have fewer underbody components that can corrode (no exhaust system, no fuel lines, no transmission cooler lines). But the body structure itself — rockers, floor pans, wheel wells, quarter panels — is the same fight as any other Ontario vehicle.

Should you rustproof an electric car?

Absolutely. Annual oil spray rustproofing is just as important for an EV as for a gas vehicle in Ontario. The body cavities that trap salt spray — inner rockers, door interiors, quarter panel interiors — are identical in construction and equally vulnerable.

One consideration specific to EVs: make sure the rustproofing provider knows how to work around the high-voltage battery and associated components. Reputable providers are familiar with this by now, but it's worth confirming. The rustproofing oil itself is non-conductive, but proper access and coverage matter.

Protecting your EV from rust in Ontario

The playbook is the same as any vehicle: rustproof annually, wash the underbody through winter, address stone chips and paint damage promptly, and inspect rocker panels and wheel wells each spring. The only addition for EV owners is to include a visual check of the battery enclosure for any coating damage or corrosion during your spring inspection.

EVs are expensive to replace and hold their value better when the body is clean. Rust prevention is a small annual cost that protects a much larger investment.
